Tell us about your Reiki journey, and where does your passion for Reiki stem from?
I first discovered Reiki when I was in college over 20 years ago. I worked for the student newspaper and pitched a story about alternative healing methods, one of which was Reiki. As part of my research to write the article, I booked a Reiki session with a local practitioner. It was life changing! I knew it was something I needed to explore. Over the years, I've continued to gravitate toward the spiritual realm and a holistic approach to mental and emotional wellness. After healing much of my own trauma through these methods, I became a Reiki Master so I could support others in their own healing journey.
What was your first Reiki session like as a client and as a practitioner?
After that session in college, I left feeling more peaceful than I had in months. At the time, I didn't really know what was happening, but I knew I felt calm and supported. My racing thoughts slowed. I had some interesting visions and felt like I was floating. As someone who's struggled with anxiety, it was a welcome respite. I was nervous at my first session as a practitioner! But it was beautiful. The client had recently experienced a loss and was emotional, but the magic of Reiki was powerfully present and held her in that moment. I felt honored to witness the experience and to be able to provide support and nurturing through Reiki.
Share a memorable session moment.
I often can tell how intense a session is going to be from the very beginning, when I put my hands on the client's head. And I often have visions and messages come through that don't make sense to me, but usually make sense to my client when I tell them after the session. At the beginning of one session, as I held my hands over my client's crown chakra, I had a very strong vision of a giant stag watching over us. He was powerful and majestic and was clearly there to say hello to my client. When I shared this with my client, she nodded like it was to be expected. She told me her father had passed, and that she had asked him to appear as a stag. I have countless stories similar to this, but the power of Reiki and its gifts still amazes me every time!
What would you advise someone before their first Reiki session?
Let your practitioner know about any nervousness, and share any intentions or desires you have for your session. You lie on a table fully clothed, and I offer various degrees of cushioning and blankets to make you comfortable. Speak up if you are more comfortable with hands-off Reiki, which is completely fine and works just as strongly! Most of all, come with an open mind and heart to receive the love Reiki offers.
